Briggate Is.........
Highly permeable - Historic - Fine grained with a compact fabric - Accretive - A retail market dotted with entertainment - Linear with a 3 storey frame interspersed with large elements - A wide pedestrian boulevard - Without formal vistas - Polarly disconnected - A north south route - Focused east and west.
Briggate is an evloving area, through history up to the present and into the future, the area has a unique place in city life. The area is focuse on consumption of all types - financial, physical and social. People journeythrough both the immediate locations of Lower Briggate, Briggate and New Briggate but also from and too wider destinations, this can make the space feel like a void that people pass through not really experiencing but drifting or marching. A great diversity of shops and people exist from all ages, classes and races brought together by the draw of Briggate. Corporate ownership of the place controls the soul of Briggate keeping ownership of the space away from the public most of the time increasing the feeling of a void.
